Shore Nurses Union Postpones One-Day Strike As It Prepares For The Potential Effects Of Hurricane Joaquin
SOMERS POINT, N.J., Oct. 1, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Nurses from Shore Medical Center today announced a one-day strike scheduled for October 8th has been postponed as they prepare for the potential effects of Hurricane Joaquin.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie declared a State of Emergency today stressing that there is the potential for heavy rains and heavy winds as well as for property damage and injury. Coastal areas are especially vulnerable.
"We all became nurses because we are called to help people in their time of need. With the storm coming, there was no debate: we must postpone the strike and be there for our community," said Jeanette Martin, a seven year nurse from Float Team.
"The nurses at Shore Medical Center live and work in this community. We've all seen what these powerful storms can do, and we are putting our full focus on protecting our patients and neighbors," said Maura Schmidt, a four year nurse from Critical Care.
Shore nurses are working with hospital management to institute emergency preparations and additional schedules to handle any issues that occur because of the weather.
