"Shira Loewenberg brings global and regional experience, a wealth of diplomatic contacts, and a strong advocacy track record that will be of immense value to AJC's expanding diplomatic efforts across Asia, and with our partners in Asian American communities," said Jason Isaacson, AJC Director of Government and International Affairs. Loewenberg assumed her new position as AJC met with dozens of world leaders, including from Asia, during the opening of the UN General Assembly.
"I am delighted to head the Asia Pacific Institute, to advance our global advocacy and diplomacy, and deepen relationships with countries key to U.S. interests," said Loewenberg.
Loewenberg comes to API after serving as Associate Director of AJC's New York Regional Office for the past two years. Previously, she worked for a number of organizations around the world, including the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations and the Outward Bound Center for Peace-building.
She holds a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. She has long experience in Asia, including two years working in Japan.
Founded in 1989, API was the first of its kind in the American Jewish community. Senior AJC leaders have traveled with API to China, Japan and South Korea. API is one of four international regional institutes of AJC, including its Africa Institute, Latino and Latin American Affairs Institute and Transatlantic Institute. API is chaired by AJC National Board member Gary Jacobs.
