Shiprock Santa Fe Announces August Exhibitions
SANTA FE, N.M., Aug. 2, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Shiprock Santa Fe is pleased to announce a series of public openings commencing with the Annual Opening Event on August 12, from 5 to 7 p.m., showcasing the finest selection of historic Native American art, jewelry, textiles, Pueblo pottery and a private collection of Navajo pictorial rugs.
On Thursday, August 17, from 2 to 4 p.m., an exhibition opening entitled Indian Market Celebration delights in the return of Verma Nequatewa/Sonwai (Hopi) and Ken Williams, Jr. (Arapaho/Seneca). Both Williams and Sonwai will present new work from their respective collections as well as a collaborative handbag featuring the work of both artists.
"Showing at Shiprock Santa Fe is very exciting. It is a chance to show a small collection of what I have been creating," says Ken Williams Jr. will present a mini-collection (five to six pieces) comprised of cohesive, colorful, fun necklaces, handbags, and a bracelet.
Sonwai is the artistic name used by Verma Nequatewa (Hopi) meaning beautiful. Nequatewa is a master jeweler who works primarily in 18 karat gold and gemstones. Using a variety of inlay and metal-working techniques, Sonwai creates elegant contemporary jewelry for private collectors and museums around the world.
Finally, on August 18, Yasutomo Kodera of Skystone Trading—a silversmith and renowned turquoise expert—will be at the gallery with pieces from his Sky Blue Hawk Collection and will be available to identify turquoise stones. Kodera owns the Skystone gallery in Nagano, Japan, which specializes in Native American jewelry and gem-quality turquoise. Sky Blue Hawk is an affordable line of Kodera's jewelry designs. The collection is carried by Barneys New York, Ginza Japan, and Shiprock Santa Fe.
