Sherwood Forest Food Mart Keeps Family, U-Haul Going

Sherwood Forest Food Mart was established by Daniel W. Scott Jr. and Gwendolyn Scott. Its original name in 1978 was Pick and Pay.

Today, Dewayne Scott, Daniel's son, runs the family business after purchasing it from his father in 2012 and renaming it. He recently expanded its services by becoming a U-Haul neighborhood dealer.

"My father's intentions were that at any time, my children or their children could walk into the store and take over it," the younger Scott said. "It will continue the family legacy."

The food mart's new name reflects its longstanding relationship to its community. A neighboring subdivision has shaped many aspects of the store, from its name to the decision to become a U-Haul dealer.

"I wanted to give them what they desperately need," Scott said.

Scott said he named his market after the neighboring subdivision out of appreciation for his loyal patrons. While there are numerous U-Haul dealers in Jacksonville, Sherwood Forest Food Mart lends easy access New Kings Road and the Interstate 295 loop northwest of downtown.

There are many local functions at Sherwood Forest Food Mart: back-to-school events, where clothing and book bags are donated; summer-school events, where youths are encouraged to keep busy and stay out of trouble; and outreach events where local churches send speakers.

"I don't have a favorite event," Scott said. "That's like asking, 'Who is your favorite child?' Every event is different but I love to see the comradery of the community."
