HARRISBURG, Pa., March 15, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania AFL-CIO President Rick Bloomingdale and Secretary-Treasurer Frank Snyder expressed optimism at today's announcement that Monaca, Pennsylvania is Shell's preferred site to build its multi-billion dollar ethane cracker plant.
"Shell's decision to locate in Western Pennsylvania, was no doubt based upon many factors that took into consideration the regions natural resources; including our roads, rivers, and rail. Arguably, the most valuable natural resource is the talented, hard working women and men of the region. The highly skilled workforce will ensure the facility will be built and operated safely, and efficiently," Bloomingdale said.
"This announcement appears to be some of the most positive economic news for the working families of western Pennsylvania in over a generation. Hopefully, this will also provide job opportunities for displaced workers who made the Horsehead Zinc facility a world class operation," said Secretary-Treasurer Frank Snyder. "Historians may recall March 15 being the 'Ides of March' according to playwright William Shakespeare; who also wrote, 'it was a winter of despair; it was a spring of hope.' Indeed, all of Pennsylvania can have hope this spring in the anticipated partnership between a world class workforce and a world class business. That combination equals a world class community," added Snyder, a lifelong resident of Beaver County.
"Hopefully, Shell's announcement will encourage other prospective businesses to tap into the rich, Keystone-State's natural resources," added Bloomingdale.
