Sharing Economy Millionaires: Top Udemy Instructors Continue to Crack Major Earnings Threshold
Top instructors eclipse $17 million in earnings from courses on the leading online marketplace for learning and teaching
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- In the latest demonstration of the potential and growth of online education, Udemy, the leading global marketplace for learning and teaching online, today announced that the courses taught by its top 10 instructors have earned $17 million. The earnings range from $500,000 to more than $8 million.
The announcement demonstrates the potential of teaching online for everyday experts to earn substantial income from sharing their expertise with skill seekers around the world. Today more than 12,000 instructors share their skills and knowledge on Udemy, with more than half of those joining in 2014 alone.
Three of Udemy's top earners include:
- Rob Percival, who transitioned from a mathematics teaching career. His courses have exceeded $2.8 million in total earnings. Percival turned to Udemy to help him balance his desire to continue teaching with a switch in career fields to web development. Percival published his first course, "The Complete Web Developer Course - Build 14 Websites," in June of 2014, and has since published two additional courses and reached nearly 120,000 students.
- Victor Bastos, whose courses focus on web development for beginners and who offers courses to Udemy users in English, Spanish, Brazilian and Japanese. Bastos began his career as a freelancer before publishing content on YouTube and eventually Udemy. Today his courses - the most popular of which is called "Become a Web Developer from Scratch" - have reached more than 52,000 Udemy students and earned nearly $900,000.
- Alun Hill, whose background is in journalism and small business development. Based in Gozo, Malta, Hill has published nine courses to the Udemy platform that primarily focus on various ways that average people can earn money, including photography, filming and even creating courses on Udemy. Hill's courses, which have been accessed by nearly 47,000 Udemy students, have earned about $650,000.
"Instructors across the globe are using Udemy to share their expertise with the people who need to build skills," said Udemy CEO Dennis Yang. "Udemy's five million students benefit from a dynamic catalogue of courses, taught by our expert instructors who enable them to move forward in their careers and fuel their passions."
Udemy features several valuable resources for its instructor community. A dedicated team works on instructor support, and a production advisory team offers personalized feedback throughout the course creation process - from initial test videos to published courses. Udemy markets courses to ensure that the right courses get to the right students at the right times. Courses such as the ones from these top instructors demonstrate the power of online learning and teaching: they developed in-demand content, and Udemy ensured that the courses reached the right audiences. Udemy also hosts online communities for instructors to learn from each other and share and receive honest feedback on everything from course topics to course promotion. Additionally, Udemy's Instructor Council, created last year, is a forum for instructors to provide ongoing feedback and advice on product feature design and community policy changes.
