SGS Webinar on New CARB/Formaldehyde Test Rules Set for Aug. 17
New Emissions Limits on Composite Wood Products Will Affect U.S. Sales Nationwide
NEW YORK, Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- "New Rules on CARB" will be the topic of a free one-hour webinar to be hosted by SGS Consumer Testing Services at 2 pm EDT on Tuesday, August 17. The presentation will address the latest regulations on formaldehyde emissions in composite wood products – including a new U.S. law plus recent changes to the 2007 standards set by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) – and their impact on U.S. retailers, distributors and manufacturers of products such as furniture, consumer shelving, DIY products, flooring, paneling, moulding and picture frames.
The original CARB regulation, known as the Airborne Toxic Control Measure to Reduce Formaldehyde Emissions from Composite Wood Products, was adopted to limit public exposure to formaldehyde because of its carcinogenic properties. Composite wood panels including hardwood plywood, particleboard and medium-density fiberboard were targeted because they comprise the largest block of controllable formaldehyde-emitting products. All parties in the distribution chain are equally liable and can be fined for non-compliance.
The Formaldehyde Standards for Composite Wood Products Act (S. 1660) signed by President Barack Obama on July 7, 2010, is modeled after the CARB regulation and designed to provide uniformity to the U.S. marketplace. Some emissions standards imposed under the new law, which amends the Toxic Substances Control Act, will take effect as early as July 2011.
The August 17 webinar will cover topics including new emissions limits, labeling requirements, sell-through exemptions, enforcement actions, destructive testing, and factory and product certification. Registration is available at https://sgsevents.webex.com
The presentation will be hosted by Chuck Coletta, Technical Director - International Hardlines, for SGS Consumer Testing Services in North America.
