SEVERE WEATHER RESILIENCE AND MITIGATION CONFERENCE IN ST. LOUIS ANNOUNCED FOR SEPTEMBER NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH
ST. LOUIS, Aug. 30, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- In 2022, 18 devastating weather events like tornadoes, floods, hurricanes, and wildfires in the U.S. incurred losses that exceeded $1 billion each, NOAA reported. The U.S. Census Bureau reported more than 3 million people were displaced from their homes. Natural disaster preparedness utilizing advanced geospatial and AI technologies for forecasting and emergency response is becoming critical for government and business leaders.
Object Computing, in partnership with Greater STL Inc., Planet, Taylor Geospatial Institute, and other geospatial technology leaders, is hosting GEO SWRM: Severe Weather Resilience and Mitigation Conference on September 19, to help leaders prepare for and respond to severe weather.
"St. Louis is the nation's center for geospatial innovation," said Andrew Dearing, Project Lead for St. Louis' GeoFutures Initiative. "Our strengths in technology, analysis, and collaboration are helping us to develop more predictive and prescriptive solutions to some of our most pressing challenges, such as severe weather events. We are excited to host GEO SWRM in St. Louis."
The conference's goals are:
- Gathering civic and business leaders, policymakers, and technology experts to share best practices for managing weather incidents, and educating on the capabilities new technologies can have in pre- and post-disasters.
- Providing hands-on training using cutting-edge tools for geospatial technology professionals.
The conference highlights geospatial technology solutions required to mitigate weather-related impacts of the region, like flooding models and assessment.
"Our exciting line-up of guest participants brings experience from the communities they serve," said Andrew Montgomery, vice president of strategy for Object Computing, a St. Louis technology firm based in St. Louis, MO. "Col. Kevin Golinghorst, former US Army Corps of Engineers of St. Louis District, is our keynote speaker."
Registration for St. Louis GEO SWRM is available online through September 11. This event is presented by Object Computing, Greater St. Louis Inc., Planet, New Light Technologies, Taylor Geospatial Institute, Saint Louis University, and University of Missouri's Data Science & Analytics Program.
