Seventh Street Bypass in Harrisburg to Close Starting June 13
High-Voltage Substation Replacement Makes Closure Necessary
HARRISBURG, Pa., June 6, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The North Seventh Street Bypass in downtown Harrisburg will close for 18 months beginning June 13 while the 40-year-old electrical substation powering the state Capitol Complex is replaced.
Department of General Services Secretary Sheri Phillips cited safety concerns and site logistical challenges when announcing the closure.
"This is a high-voltage electrical worksite, so it is in everyone's best interest to close the bypass for this project," Phillips said. "This closure will enhance the safety of the construction workers and motorists."
Phillips said the decision was influenced by logistical issues that include the footprint of the site, storage and delivery of materials, construction activity and the anticipated congestion of the work area.
The bypass is only several hundred yards in length but is fairly heavily traveled. While it is closed, all through-traffic turning right from Fifth Street onto Walnut Street will be redirected eastbound across the State Street Bridge. Metered parking in front of the Forum Place Building will still be available.
The substation replacement project, which has already begun, will include the construction of a new building, the demolition and replacement of new units and the installation of a feeder distribution system.
Signs informing motorists of the upcoming closure are already in place and will be accompanied by additional signage and the presence of a Capitol Police Officer on June 13.
