Our legacy begins with our founders: George G. Glenner, M.D. and his wife, Joy Glenner. Dr. Glenner was at the National Institutes of Health for 26 years before being recruited to UCSD School of Medicine in 1980 where he was a Distinguished Research Pathologist. Dr. Glenner's seminal scientific isolation and identification of the βeta amyloid protein in 1984 opened the door to Alzheimer's disease research. George's compassion for the families caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's disease was as tangible as his scientific genius. The two qualities coalesced late one night in May 1982 as George and Joy, who volunteered in his research laboratory, answered a desperate phone call.  An overwrought family caregiver was preparing to take the life of his wife who was severely afflicted with Alzheimer's disease and himself. The next day, the creation of the first non-profit, dementia-specific, adult social/medical model day program was created. Joy became the in-kind Executive Director until she retired in 2007.

Dr. Glenner passed away in 1995.  Mrs. Joy Glenner lives in San Diego County and is actively involved with the organization that honors her late husband's legacy and other philanthropic organizations.

The Glenner legacy of touching lives through Sharing the Caring was created out of love and understanding of the urgent and unmet need for support for family caregivers. Their legacy is continuing while scientists pursue The Answer to this dehumanizing disease that robs the mind of its victims while it breaks the heart of their families.
