CAMBRIDGE, Mass., April 2, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Sense, whose intelligent home energy monitor interprets the power usage and activity of devices in the home, today announced support for the TP-Link Kasa HS300 Smart Strip, making it easy to track and control multiple consumer electronics simultaneously in the Sense App. With this integration, Sense reveals the energy drains from a wide range of devices, including popular consumer electronics, and helps homeowners save money.
Through this integration, homeowners can plug up to six devices into the Kasa HS300 smart strip and see each one's energy usage and activity in the Sense app. For instance, a homeowner could assess how much energy each of their home theater components uses while active and while idle, identify the energy hogs and turn them off in the app.
In 2017 there were nearly 3.4B consumer tech devices across the country, consuming 143TWh of electricity annually, according to the Consumer Technology Association. The CTA's 2016 study found that the average household has 24 home electronics devices, including home office products like laptops and printers, as well as entertainment gadgets like TVs, cable boxes, game consoles, DVRs, speakers, and soundbars.
Through the visibility offered by Sense combined with the control offered by the TP-Link Kasa HS300 Smart Strip, homeowners can save money on electricity that's wasted by devices that stay on continuously. In a recent analysis of more than 4000 homes, Sense discovered that 23% of home electricity is consumed by Always On devices, a hidden energy drain that costs the average home $308 annually. Major culprits include home electronics in standby mode, or other devices that continue to consume power even when they appear to be off.
Consumer electronics have become increasingly efficient, but many homes have hidden energy hogs in their home entertainment setup or home office. For instance, Sense customers have discovered older model audio receivers that use 250W continuously—an annual cost of $262 — and speakers that use 30W in idle mode, costing the homeowner $32 annually.
Quote from Michael Phillips, CEO and co-founder, Sense:
"Most homeowners aren't aware of the energy cost of home electronics that stay on continuously. In fact, there's a tremendous potential for cost savings and for energy conservation simply by controlling your home gadgets that are always on. With this integration, Sense reveals the hidden energy patterns of the consumer electronics we use every day, so homeowners can make better choices to save money and live more responsibly."
