Seniors Should Take Special Precautions During Hurricane Season According to Matrix Home Care
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Aug. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Seniors throughout Florida and the gulf coast region should take special precautions as Hurricane Isaac appears to be heading toward the region over the next several days.
"If you live in a high risk area, be prepared not only with supplies, but with important medical information and a detailed list of medications and telephone numbers to local hospitals, shelters and your area Agency on Aging and the Red Cross," according to Alex Fiuza, PhD, Matrix Home Care's director of client services for Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. "This information is as just as important as a fresh supply of batteries, food and water."
"Keeping medications dry and easily accessible are vital during any emergency storm," says Janice Williams, Vice President of Matrix Home Care. "While preparing for a hurricane you will need to put your pill box in a zip lock bag. In addition, put all current medication bottles in a separate bag because pharmacies cannot refill prescriptions without the pill bottle."
Caregivers working with seniors who have disabilities should have an action plan in place so that evacuations are thought through prior to any emergency. A home assessment on safety can prevent accidents. Having towels available and rugs on the floors near outside doors will keep rain and moisture off the floors and prevent slipping and falling.
With clients in 36 counties throughout the state of Florida, planning is key according to Pernille Ostberg, MBA, RPh, Matrix president and CEO. "We have emergency plans pre-set for each client, each office, and every employee of the company."
Based in West Palm Beach, Matrix provides a complete array of services, home health care, disability management so injured employees can quickly return to work, independent senior care based on the needs of the elderly and specialty nurses' services, including wound care, infusion therapy and rehabilitation nursing.
