The Essence sensory stimulation program was developed based on research into the benefits of aromatherapy for dementia support and tested with staff and families of residents to develop a set of best practices. The program uses signature aromatherapy blends to help alleviate stress, support healthy digestion, and promote positive emotional responses, along with a host of additional wellness benefits. Since Essence is based on sensory stimulation, it allows caregivers to interact in a meaningful way with residents, even as residents progress through all levels of dementia when residents may be non-verbal. A "great is not enough" philosophy is the driving force behind this program, with a focus on continual improvement based on resident response. After each one-on-one session, the memory care director assesses the benefits of the session and notes resident responses to better understand what works best for each resident.
