Senior Appropriator Calls for Bipartisan Negotiations on Budget Agreement
WASHINGTON, Sept. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congressman Chaka Fattah (PA-02), a Senior Member of the House Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement calling for responsible budget negotiations ahead of the end of the government's fiscal year on September 30:
"Months ago, my colleagues and I on the Appropriations Committee set out to craft 12 appropriations bills that would prioritize responsible fiscal investments in order to advance our country's best interests.
"Unfortunately, partisan politics has once again seized this process and we find ourselves faced with no budget agreement and only six legislative days until the fiscal year ends on September 30.
"The United States cannot afford another unnecessary government shutdown; our country deserves better, and our constituents deserve better. Two years ago, Republicans forced a 16-day shutdown that cost the nation billions of dollars and furloughed thousands of government workers across the country. Now, they are threatening to forgo a responsible budget solution that would keep the government funded and open, to instead jeopardize the United States' fiscal standing.
"As a Senior Appropriator I urge my fellow Republicans to act responsibly and forgo the needless, partisan brinkmanship that has taken over. It is time to come to the negotiating table and find common ground with Democrats so this Congress can produce a budget that works for all Americans."
