Senators Follow Texas Lawyers' Lead and Call on Transportation Dept. to Issue Do Not Drive Warning on Recalled GM Vehicles
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, April 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Senators Edward J. Markey (D-Mass) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) joined Texas lawyer Bob Hilliard in the pursuit to issue a "Do Not Drive" warning to all owners of recalled GM vehicles. The senators called on the Department of Transportation (DOT) to advise owners of recalled GM vehicles to cease driving the vehicles until the faulty ignition switches are repaired.
Hilliard, lead lawyer and partner at the Texas Law firm Hilliard Munoz Gonzales (HMG) first requested the mandatory injunction on April 4 but a federal court judge rejected the request to park the 2.6 million vehicles, deferring to the federal regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The senators agree with Hilliard that the decision puts motorists' lives at risk so they are calling on DOT to compel GM to issue its own warning directly to drivers, which GM has historically refused. GM has said it could take until October 2014 before all repairs of impacted vehicles can be complete, which leaves drivers and motorists at risk.
"Every day that unrepaired vehicles remain on the road increases the risk of more injuries, deaths, and damage," write the Senators. "We believe you—as the federal regulator referred to by the court—have the unique opportunity to protect public safety by taking stronger action to issue warnings of these dangers."
Hilliard says:
"It is the epitome of arrogance to believe that grounding these vehicles will create 'enormous' damages to GM while discounting the 'enormous damage' to tomorrow's victim and the families of those victims."
"Everyone who owns one of these recalled vehicles needs to park it now! When this defect occurs, the power steering will not work, the power brakes will not work, and the airbags will not deploy!"
"The magnitude of danger never changes, never lessens. It is simply a roll of the dice as to when one of these vehicles suddenly turns into a uncontrollable missile, killing and injuring anyone in it or around it."
HILLIARD'S CLIENTS
Bob Hilliard has been hired to represent families from around the country. Each case is evaluated to assure there was a defect and the defect contributed to the injuries. To date he has been hired to investigate and has confirmed at least 50 deaths and 270 serious injures can be directly attributed to GM and its defect.
"Unfortunately, we are seeing just the tip of the iceberg, given how many millions of defective vehicles have been driving the roads of America for over 10 years," said Hilliard.
