Senator Conrad was first elected to the Senate in 1986 and is retiring when the Senate adjourns at the end of this session. In addition to providing an update on the Fiscal Cliff and budget negotiations, he is expected to offer a perspective on his over 25 years in the Senate.
In 2006 Time Magazine named Senator Conrad as one of "America's Ten Best Senators." The Bismarck Tribune called Senator Conrad "the most influential senator North Dakota has ever produced."
Senator Conrad helped write the 2002 and 2008 Farm Bills, wrote health care policy to expand access to hospitals in rural areas, has fought unfair trade practices, and introduced comprehensive energy legislation that would make the United States more energy independent.
Senator Conrad has bipartisan respect as an expert on federal budget matters and is considered a leading "deficit hawk" who also protects the vulnerable.
A fifth-generation North Dakotan, Senator Conrad was born in Bismarck.
