TUNNEL CITY, Wis., May 3, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Recently, Unimin Corp. invited Senator Patrick Testin (R-Town of Hull) to don a hard hat and join them at their Tunnel City sand mine as part of the senator's "On the job with Patrick Testin" series.
For eight hours, Sen. Testin took a hands on approach to learning about the plant that employs more than 100 area workers— reviving an idea from former governor and U.S. Sen. Bob Graham to spend time working alongside the members of the community.
The Senator had the opportunity to work a full day alongside Unimin employees. He worked in a number of capacities across the plant, and saw first-hand why Unimin is North America's leading industrial mineral producer.
"Unimin maintains a strong economic presence in Wisconsin and they serve as a good neighbor, a strong corporate citizen, and an important employer in the community," said Senator Testin. "Not only do they supply more than 100 good-paying jobs right here in Tunnel City, they also uphold – and exceed - environmental standards, provide habitat for endangered species, and work with local governmental officials to keep the community up-to-date on developments. In the last four months, they've added – and filled - twenty-five jobs, and I can see why; it's a great place to work."
In recent years, Unimin has worked with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to become a part of its Green Tier Program. The company's participation is reflective of its commitment to the environment and to the communities its employees call home.
"Working alongside our employees, Sen. Testin learned firsthand how we execute with excellence and safety," Mark Massicotte, plant manager in Tunnel City, said. "His enthusiasm and desire to learn about our work, created moments we're never going to forget. And, we appreciate and applaud his focus on - and passion for - veterans, small business owners, and everyday hard-working taxpayers."
