CAMPBELL, Calif., July 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Silicon Valley startup Tachyum Inc. announced today Fred Weber has signed on the Board of Advisors to help steer Tachyum's efforts to conquer the performance plateau in nanometer-class chips and the systems they power.
Weber is well known for his ten years of leadership at AMD, where he served as Chief Technical Officer and Corporate Vice President, as well as Vice President of Design. He led AMD to greater prominence in the industry, and was named one of the 25 most influential CTOs by InfoWorld Magazine. Two years into his tenure as CTO, AMD unveiled the industry's first x86-compatible 64-bit processors, the Opteron and Athlon 64. Fred led the design of AMD's first 64-bit processor.
"Fred's strategic leadership and track record of innovation are legendary. We consider it a coup that he has joined Tachyum as an advisor," said Tachyum CEO Dr. Radoslav "Rado" Danilak. "Fred is a true technology innovator, not constrained by the archaic dogma that has dominated the semiconductor market and its design philosophy for so long."
Weber currently serves on the board and as an advisor for Lattice Semiconductor, Samsung Electronics, Netspeed Systems, and others. He co-founded MetaRAM, Inc. and was a member of the founding team of Kendall Square Research, an early leader in the development of memory systems, CPU, and multiprocessor verification. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, studied Physics and Systems Engineering at Harvard University, and received BS in Physics.
"After a very deep technical dive into Tachyum, I believe they are onto something really important here. I am interested in new approaches to technology problems. The industry faces an undeniably enormous problem as we reach the performance limits of what chips built from nanometer-size devices can achieve," said Weber. "A puzzle of this magnitude requires real innovation, and I'm convinced the Tachyum team has the ability to deliver high-performance processing power in a fundamentally new way."
Tachyum is unlocking the inherent performance of nanometer-size devices, to deliver products that will reorder the landscape of the $24 billion dollar hyperscale data center market, growing at 15% CAGR. Tachyum is set to deliver increases of more than 10X in processing performance, at fraction of the cost of competing products. The company expects to make further announcements in 2017.
