SEIU United Long Term Care Workers (ULTCW) Join South Los Angeles Leaders Calling for New Stop Along New "Crenshaw Subway"
Leaders Testified in Support of New Motion for a Stop at the Leimert Park/Vernon Avenue, and for Line to go underground
LOS ANGELES, May 26, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Dozens of SEIU United Long Term Care Workers (ULTCW) members attended the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Board meeting on Thursday about the new light rail line that will run through South Los Angeles, called the "Crenshaw Subway." Members attended to support a motion by County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who is a member of the MTA Board, which requests the new line to include a stop at Leimert Park/Vernon Avenue, the financial center of the area. The motion also suggests that the subway go underground, to avoid traffic congestion in the area.
"This subway line will be a positive influence in our neighborhood. It will connect us to other neighborhoods in the city, and will bring new life to South Los Angeles and Inglewood," said Elba Lilian Pleitez, SEIU ULTCW member who attended the hearing. "It does need to be done right, though. Leimert Park needs to be served, and keeping it underground will help keep our kids safe."
Without the stop at Leimert Park/Vernon Avenue, there would be no stops between Martin Luther King Boulevard and Slauson Avenue, and no station at all at Leimert Park. A stop at Leimert Park would also increase commercial traffic in the area, which is the financial center of the neighborhood.
