NEW YORK, Oct. 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Seeger Weiss LLP reports that the widespread Volkswagen recall of 11 million vehicles worldwide will include 8.5 million vehicles in Europe. German regulators received a plan from the company to update vehicles' software that does not meet emissions standards, but the regulators deemed it insufficient. Volkswagen then broadened its plan to include 8.5 million diesel cars in Europe. In the United States, a solution has yet to be presented to regulators because it could require a more detailed fix. This is due to emissions standards in the U.S. being tougher than those in Europe.
The recall was prompted after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was tipped off that Volkswagen executives had lied to environmental regulators by rigging an emissions test, violating the Clean Air Act. The company originally blamed technical errors for the discrepancies found between their diesel vehicles' low emissions tests and higher emission levels on the road but admitted to intentionally deceiving officials in September.
The cars that were affected by the recall include:
Volkswagen will be required to fix the emissions system to comply with federal regulations and emissions standards. Volkswagen has also suspended another high-ranking executive. Former Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn resigned in September after the scandal broke and, now, the head of quality control is the fifth to be suspended due to the recall.
If you purchased or leased a 2009-2015 model year Volkswagen or Audi from the recall list, it is important to speak to an experienced class action lawyer immediately.
