DALLAS, April 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Securus Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of inmate communications services, investigative technologies, corrections/law enforcement/ emergency information technology services, and active global positioning systems (GPS) based offender monitoring devices, announced that it has successfully completed an American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Statement on Auditing Standards No. 70 (SAS 70) certification. The SAS 70 certification has technically been replaced with SOC-1 nomenclature (Service Organizational Controls), but the audit requirements are the same. A SAS 70 certification indicates that an independent accounting and auditing firm has completed a comprehensive and in-depth evaluation and testing of Securus' internal controls and related activities. This certification confirms that the company has effective controls and safeguards in place to manage information and data belonging to its customers.
Inmate telecommunications providers need to install and operate highly sophisticated call management platforms and related services to meet the security and public safety needs of correctional facilities. These platforms need to be able to accurately process, manage, and control millions of call records and call recordings for security and investigative purposes. A SAS 70 Type II report reinforces to correctional facilities and their auditors that Securus has the necessary controls in place to manage this critical information. Securus is the only inmate telecommunications platform provider to have obtained a SAS 70 Type II certification.
"We are pleased that our auditors have again provided us this certification," stated Richard A. ("Rick") Smith, Securus' President and Chief Executive Officer. "Successfully completing this vigorous third party independent review of our security and operational controls sets Securus apart from the rest of the inmate telecommunications industry. Our experience in providing correctional facilities with telecommunications and investigative services for more than 25 years has allowed us to develop and implement important and effective systems necessary to accurately process, bill, manage and control information and call records for our customers."
"This is not simply an innocuous accounting certification – this represents an important milestone for the work that we do for prisons and jails in the United States. This certification tests all 900 Associates at Securus – how well and accurately that we do our jobs – so being the only inmate telephone services provider having achieved this milestone is significant," Smith said.
