SecureState Consultant to Introduce Smart Meter Hacking Framework at Security B-Sides Vegas
Live public demonstration of Termineter, the world's first open source smart meter hacking framework
CLEVELAND, July 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- SecureState, a management consulting firm specializing in information security, today announced that Spencer McIntyre, of the Research & Innovation Team, will be presenting at Security B-Sides Vegas on Wednesday, July 25, 3 pm at The Artisan Boutique Hotel.
McIntyre will present, "How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the Smart Meter." The presentation will include the first live public demonstration of Termineter, a highly anticipated open source framework that allows users to assess the security of Smart Meter utility meters over the optical interface. This is the first framework designed to give authorized individuals access to manipulate and test the security of smart meters.
The full open source code of Termineter will be released to the public on July 19 via SecureState's website. The goal of a public release for this utility is to promote security awareness for Smart Meters and provide a tool that brings basic testing capabilities to the community and meter manufactures so that security can be improved.
"This tool greatly benefits the security community because it will give security researchers and meter manufacturers an open source tool they can use to interact with the optical port on the meter," said McIntyre.
Neither "Termineter" nor the modules contained within it carry any vendor specific information. The design of "Termineter" was largely dependent on the ANSI published standards which can be purchased by the general population.
Security B-Sides is the first grass roots open security conference in the world. Each BSides is a community-driven framework for building events for and by information security community members. The goal is to expand the spectrum of conversation beyond the traditional confines of space and time. It creates opportunities for individuals to both present and participate in an intimate atmosphere that encourages collaboration. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. It is where conversations for the next-big thing are happening.
