DENVER, Oct. 19, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- With the depletion of IPv4 addresses already begun at some Regional Internet Registries, Secure64 Software Corporation today announced its DNS64 migration technology – available through its Secure64 DNS Cache software appliance – is being deployed at one of the largest U.S. wireless providers. The deployment is in support of the wireless provider's fast-growing network of IP-enabled handsets and demonstrates the speed and return on investment of this approach to managing IPv4-to-IPv6 transitions.

Secure64 recently developed a white paper to help service providers migrate to IPv6 (http://www.secure64.com/transition_ipv6). Secure64 recommends that service providers employ current best practices which involve selecting a migration technology and then evaluating different products based on their support of that technology. These migration technologies include:
- Dual stack - a migration technology where both IP protocol versions coexist in all parts of the network.
- 6RD - an RFC-standardized migration technology that uses tunnels to provide IPv6 access for customers. The service provider core network is still IPv4.
- Dual Stack (DS) Lite - a migration technology that is the mirror image of 6RD. 6RD uses an IPv4 core network with an IPv6 tunnel, whereas DS Lite uses an IPv6-enabled core with IPv4 tunneling.
- DNS64/NAT64 - a migration technology that leapfrogs into IPv6, skipping complicated tunnels and dual-stacked networks. The basic idea is to create an IPv6-only network at the client side and translate any packets that need to reach the IPv4-only Internet. The fact that an IPv6-only network is created does not limit the client's possibility to access IPv4-only content. The translators provide backwards compatibility.
Secure64 incorporated DNS64 migration technology because it operates on a simple, single-stack network, it is not compute-intensive to operate, and it eliminates the need for additional IPv4 addresses in order to scale.
