WASHINGTON, Sept. 4, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Heather Wilson, the 24th Secretary of the U.S. Air Force, will deliver an address on "The Future of American Air Power in the 21st Century," including plans for future space and cyber operations as well as the incorporation of new technologies and weapons systems, at a National Press Club Headliners Luncheon on Wednesday, September 26.
Secretary Wilson was nominated by President Trump and sworn into office by Secretary of Defense James Mattis on May 16, 2017. She is responsible for the affairs of the Department of the Air Force and oversees the Air Force's annual budget of more than $138 billion, directing the department's strategy and policy development, risk management, weapons acquisition, technology investments and human resource management.
Wilson graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in what was only the institution's third graduating class to include women. She served as an officer in the Air Force from 1982 until 1989, when she was chosen to serve on the National Security Council staff as director for defense policy and arms control for President George H.W. Bush. In 1995 Wilson was appointed Cabinet Secretary for the Department of Children and Families in New Mexico, a position she held until 1998, when she was elected to represent New Mexico's 1st congressional district as a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives. While in congress, Wilson served on the House Armed Services Committee, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
Lunch will be served in the club's Holeman Lounge at 12:30 p.m., with remarks beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session ending at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $25 for National Press Club members (members may purchase two tickets at this rate) and $39 for all other non-member tickets.
