Secretary of Health Kicks Off Clinical Scholars Day at Pennsylvania State Capitol
HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 21, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Secretary of Health Karen Murphy today delivered the welcoming remarks to the University of Pennsylvania Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars for the inaugural Clinical Scholar Day event at the Matthew Ryan Office Building in the Pennsylvania State Capitol complex.
"It is important for the Pennsylvania Department of Health to collaborate with health care professionals to advance our efforts to improve the health of all Pennsylvanians. This is an opportunity to share with these outstanding physicians the mission of our health department," said Secretary Murphy. "It is our hope that, by working with the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars, we can collectively better serve the people of Pennsylvania through enhanced research and policy collaboration."
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars are a group of young physicians who are pursuing Masters level coursework in health services research at the University of Pennsylvania. As part of their program, the scholars visit Pennsylvania's Capitol to learn about how this process works in the commonwealth.
Founded in 1972, the goal of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars program is to integrate scholars' clinical expertise with training in program development and research methods to help them find solutions to the challenges posed by the U.S. health care system, community health, and health services research.
Scholars train at one of the following four participating institutions: the University of California, Los Angeles; the University of Michigan; the University of Pennsylvania; and Yale University. Although their programs vary in design and emphasis, each institution has developed a core structure that introduces scholars to the methods used in health care research, and each offers formal coursework, individual mentorship, and guidance in project development
At the event today, the clinical scholars met with Secretary Murphy, several of her key staff members, other department secretaries, and several legislators to better understand how the agency leads the health care agenda for the state. The scholars also learned about opportunities to get involved with the work of the department.
