Wolf Administration Continues Efforts to Raise the Wage in PA
MECHANICSBURG, Pa., June 14, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Dennis Davin today continued the "Jobs that Pay" tour at the eastern U.S. processing and distribution facility for thredUP, a leading online marketplace for consumers to buy and sell like-new women's and children's clothing. Davin commended company officials for its continued growth and strong commitment to supporting its workforce.
"It's important that we look at companies like thredUP as an example of the success a business can experience while also paying its employees a competitive wage," Secretary Davin said. "This company has shown a commitment to empowering its employees with fair wages, increasing the purchasing power of the workforce and we are very excited that they are thriving in Central Pennsylvania."
In 2015, the Governor's Action Team announced that thredUP would be establishing a site in Cumberland County. Today, thredUP has more than 100 employees on site and offers a starting wage of $11 per hour.
Governor Wolf is calling on Pennsylvania's House and Senate to pass legislation to raise Pennsylvania's minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.15 per hour, while tying it to inflation to maintain its purchasing power over time. A minimum wage increase to $10.15 per hour supports local businesses, creates new jobs, and would boost state revenue by roughly $60 million annually.
thredUP is the leading online marketplace to buy and sell like-new women's and kids' clothing. The company pioneered the Clean Out Bag, the most convenient way for consumers to sell clothes they're no longer wearing. It accepts clothing from more than 25,000 women's and kids' brands, and resells the items for up to 90 percent off the original retail price. Headquartered in downtown San Francisco, thredUP is backed by world-class investors and a team that includes investors and executives from Netflix, Virgin, Diane von Furstenberg, GAP, Macy's, and other powerful brands. thredUP is reinventing the secondhand clothing industry and inspiring a new generation of consumers to think secondhand first.
