Second Student Death Within Weeks Fuels ACT Campaign
FARMINGDALE, N.Y., Nov. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Arthur Lih, founder and president of LifeVac, spoke on the urgency of the Abolish Choking Tragedies campaign with the goal of ending accidental choking deaths in schools.
"Tuesday's death of a Brooklyn student has once again brought the need for the ACT campaign to the forefront. There is simply no reason for a child to choke to death in school," Lih said.
"We need more school personnel trained in ACLS protocol and we need every school to be equipped with the most current rescue tools," Lih continued. "Schools have fire drills, which are necessary prevention measures, but the fact is more children die from choking each year than fires in the home, school or anywhere else combined. Having multiple school personnel trained in Red Cross protocol and proper use of the LifeVac will reduce the number of choking deaths and help us abolish these senseless deaths."
The ACT campaign will engage students, parents and teachers to work with their schools for more training and awareness of what to do in a choking emergency.
Choking is the third leading cause of accidental death in children under 15 years old and the over 65 population and the fourth leading cause of accidental death in the United States.
