Second High-Profile Attorney Joins Brinks ITC Practice Group
International trade attorney Vander Schaaf joins D.C. office of IP law firm
WASHINGTON, April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the U.S., has again expanded its new Washington D.C. office with the addition of attorney Lyle Vander Schaaf, a leading international trade attorney and former legal counsel at the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC).
The addition of Vander Schaaf closely follows Brinks' recent announcement that attorney Jay Reiziss, also an ITC veteran, had joined Brinks.
"We are delighted to welcome our newest partner to the firm," said Brinks president Gary M. Ropski. "Lyle Vander Schaaf's legal and business insights in the international trade area will significantly add to the depth of services we can offer our clients."
Laura Beth Miller, who chairs the ITC practice at Brinks, added, "We have worked closely with Lyle on a variety of ITC and customs matters and have great respect for his many talents."
Vander Schaaf has been listed in Euromoney PLC's Expert Guides: The World's Leading International Trade Lawyers. An international trade attorney with a focus on intellectual property, he practices before the ITC, U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Trade Representative and U.S. Customs offices, and represents clients in trade litigation before the U.S. federal courts and NAFTA panels. Vander Schaaf has participated in a number of World Trade Organization (WTO) dispute panel proceedings and counsels clients on free trade agreements and regional trade issues.
Before entering private practice, Vander Schaaf served in the Office of General Counsel of the ITC, as well as in the office of then-Chairman Peter S. Watson. He managed a variety of patent and trademark-based Section 337 investigations, including drafting opinions and advising commissioners in their decisions under Section 337. He led a number of antidumping and countervailing duty investigations, and handled various GATT and WTO trade matters. Prior to joining Brinks, Vander Schaaf was a partner at Bryan Cave LLP, where he led the ITC practice.
"I am excited to be joining the Brinks team," said Vander Schaaf. "Together, we offer domestic and international clients a wealth of resources and a depth of IP and trade experience that allows us to serve them more efficiently."
At Brinks, Vander Schaaf will continue to appear before the ITC in Section 337 investigations related to unfair competition. He also will assist clients with anti-dumping and countervailing duty disputes, and safeguards investigations under the WTO, as well as customs issues.
"We opened our Washington D.C. office with the vision of providing our clients with expanded services related to the ITC, international trade and unfair competition," said Thomas L. Holt, managing partner of Brinks' Washington D.C. office. "Lyle adds to our D.C. office a depth of experience in each of these areas that will directly benefit our clients."
