Second Harvest Heartland Encourages Youth Volunteerism with "Bring Your Child to Serve Day" on January 19
ST. PAUL, Minn., Jan. 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- For the third year in a row, Second Harvest Heartland is offering parents and their children an opportunity to volunteer together on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a national day of community service in honor of Dr. King. "Bring Your Child to Serve Day" allows Second Harvest Heartland to engage directly with young people to generate awareness around the issue of hunger, promote the value of community service, and, ultimately, increase youth volunteerism.
"Minnesotans are known for their generosity to give back, to support those in need, and to actively participate in social causes. We hope that by providing young people with a meaningful volunteer opportunity through 'Bring Your Child to Serve Day,' we will help foster and grow that value of generosity and influence a life-long desire to support hunger relief," said Rob Zeaske, CEO of Second Harvest Heartland.
Bremer Bank, a longtime supporter of community service with a keen interest in hunger relief, is again sponsoring the event. Bremer employees and their children will be among those volunteering.
"Supporting the communities we serve is part of our culture at Bremer Bank. 'Bring Your Child to Serve Day' is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate that. We are pleased to again partner with Second Harvest Heartland to help impact hunger relief in such a meaningful way," said Greg Hilding, Group President with Bremer Bank.
"Bring Your Child to Serve Day" is taking place from 9:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Monday, January 19 at Second Harvest Heartland West, located at 6325 Sandburg Road in Golden Valley. More than 400 youth ages eight and older and their parents will work in two-hour shifts sorting and packing food to support the 1 in 10 individuals in need of hunger relief in our community. Last year, 439 volunteers provided 878 hours of service during the day-long event.
Media interested in securing photos or videos during the "Bring Your Child to Serve Day" event are encouraged to visit Second Harvest Heartland between 1 – 3 pm.
