Second Annual YouSendIt Earth Day Challenge Encourages Users to Save Paper and Trees by Cutting back on Hard-Copies
YouSendIt collects pledges from users to increase environmentally friendly file transfer practices
CAMPBELL, Calif., April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- To showcase its commitment to Earth Day and the environment, YouSendIt, the number-one secure Web-based digital file delivery company, today announced the Earth Day Challenge, which will run from April 1 to April 30, 2010. In its second year, the YouSendIt Earth Day Challenge encourages users to pledge their support for the environment by using YouSendIt to transfer information instead of printing out pages or burning files to a CD or DVD.
In 2009, YouSendIt users pledged to save more than 12 million pieces of paper, 1,400 trees and more than 40,000 gallons of water that would have gone into the production of paper. The pledges resulted in more than 419,000 shipments not being sent and nearly 35 million fewer miles driven to deliver the shipments. YouSendIt hopes to exceed these pledges during the 2010 challenge and encourage even more environmentally friendly practices.
Users can simply visit the Earth Day Challenge Web site and pledge to reduce the number of pages they will print, shipments they will send by courier, and CDs and DVDs they will burn. Then a YouSendIt calculator will display:
- The number of trees saved
- The carbon emissions saved
- The number of BTUs of energy saved
- The number of gallons of fresh water that will not be consumed during paper production
- The dollar savings they earn by cutting out shipping and printing costs
"As the use of digital file transfer continues to grow, individuals and businesses recognize the productivity and cost benefits achieved from sending documents digitally, but many do not realize the underlying environmental benefits. YouSendIt is dedicated to helping our users realize cost and time savings, and we are equally proud to assist our users in saving the environment, one document at a time," said Ranjith Kumaran, Founder and Chief Technology Officer, YouSendIt. "By providing our users with quantifiable measurements regarding their impact on the environment we hope to encourage more environmentally friendly practices in the workplace and at home," he added.
Each pledge enters users in the challenge and qualifies them for the opportunity to win one of these prizes:
Additionally, users who share the Earth Day Challenge information through social media outlets are also qualified to win prizes. The first ten users who post about the program on Twitter and Facebook each day of the challenge will win a YouSendIt grocery bag. There also will be a random drawing of all users who post updates using various social media channels. The winner will receive an iPad.
Winners will be announced on May 3. For more information, please visit the Earth Day Challenge website: http://bit.ly/2010Earth.
