Second-annual RedPlum Super (Savings) Man Contest Celebrates men who Save
Connecticut man Proves Women Aren't the Dominant Gender When it Comes to Savings
LIVONIA, Mich., July 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Redplum.com, a coupon and value lifestyle site and a leading provider of deals and savings on brands consumers want most, named a Connecticut man its savings hero as part of RedPlum®'s second-annual Super (Savings) Man Contest, which raised awareness to the number of men who seek out deals, coupons and savings much like their female counterparts.
More than 500 men were nominated in the contest on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/redplumsaves from fans lauding the men they know – husbands, dads, sons, in-laws and even co-workers – who took note and admire their savings ways. Entries came in from across the country showcasing men who utilize rebates and blog about food and travel to save on entertainment expenses, to men who teach coupon classes to share their knowledge of scoring a great deal.
"We're finding that more and more men are adopting savings behaviors and are bringing value into their lives," said Lisa Reynolds, RedPlum's Mom Saver in Chief. "The nominations we received this year showed the breadth and depth of the ways men are saving money. It's a trend that is growing."
Four finalists – Manoj Shah of Santa Fe, New Mexico; Eric Siglin, of Riverview, Florida; and Jim Robinson of Epsom, New Hampshire – were named among the nominees during a week-long vote. RedPlum Facebook fans had the final say naming Ken Simmons of Vernon, Connecticut the Super (Savings) Man, who was nominated by his wife, Patricia Simmons. Ken saves in all aspects of his life from cutting coupons from grocery, warehouse, department and pet stores to trading coupons with co-workers to increase his savings and share out deals. He doesn't pass up a buy one, get one, or even two free offers and estimates that he saves 25% or more on his weekly grocery bill. He also saves at restaurants with a keen eye toward the ones where kids eat free.
"It doesn't take much time to clip coupons and look at sales in the circulars in the newspaper or in your mailbox," said Simmons, RedPlum's 2012 Super (Savings) Man. "Combine them both for the greatest savings. Also look for the off-the-wall savings from local area merchants. Facebook® is another great place, you can get coupons or deals just for liking a product or location."
Simmons also added that although he grew up seeing his mom coupon, his smart-spender ways increased as he saw the impact on his own household. "The economy is tough right now," he said. "Ten years ago prices were not where they are today. Gas prices and groceries are high; you have to try and save a bit here and there." One small thing Simmons does every day -- bring his lunch to work, which represents a considerable savings, he said.
Simmons received a "Grill Guy Prize Pack" featuring a Gas Smoker and a $100 Omaha Steak gift certificate, plus a $100 gift certificate to Restaurant.com. Three finalists and all nominators also received $100 Restaurant.com gift certificates. The winning nominator also received a $50 gift card.
Men who save was a recent topic on Viva la Value, an online radio show hosted by Reynolds to help listeners achieve a value lifestyle in their daily lives from grocery shopping to dining, entertaining, teaching children about money and more. In June Reynolds spoke with Joe Daugirdas, The Coupon Guy® and Charlie Gutz of ThreeThriftyGuys.com to learn why men save and how they do it.
