Seattle's Dr. Alexander Sobel Weighs In On Emerging Injection-Based Fat Reduction
As scientists research potential fat reduction techniques, Anderson Sobel Cosmetic Surgery urges caution and emphasizes the safety and effectiveness of established methods.
SEATTLE, May 5, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- A compound commonly found in asthma inhalers is currently being investigated as an injectable fat reduction substance. LIPO-202, an injectable form of salmeterol xinafoate, is a well-established asthma treatment. Emerging research indicates that the drug may be effective as an injectable for fat reduction.
If current research proves fruitful, this nonsurgical procedure could be performed by a physician in less than five minutes. It would involve injections in the abdominal area, with a concentration on fat bulges. It is estimated patients would need weekly treatments for eight weeks, with the potential of seeing visible results in about four weeks.
"Emerging research like this is exciting, but it's important to remember that this is still in the experimental stages," notes Dr. Alex Sobel of Anderson Sobel Cosmetic Surgery. "I'm looking forward to seeing the results of larger trials."
The most recent trials pinpointed the optimal dose and noted that side effects were generally mild, and restricted mostly to the injection site. Patients in the treatment group showed a mean reduction of 1.6 cm versus 0.65 cm for placebo.
"The trials are encouraging, but even if all goes well, the public should know that it will be a while before this product is on the market," Dr. Sobel continues. "In the mean time, patients ready for body contouring should consider fat reduction techniques that have proven to be successful over time."
Liposuction (also known as liposculpture) is a safe and effective means of fat reduction and remains one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures. Unlike non-surgical fat reduction methods, which reduce fat in general areas, liposuction has the advantage of allowing doctors to precisely reshape patient contours. Dr. Sobel offers tumescent lipo and uses the thinnest cannulas available. The practice has an extensive track record of healthy, satisfied patients.
Dr. Sobel stays on the cutting edge of fat reduction research so he can provide the best possible care to his patients. "I look forward to seeing the results of the next trial," says Dr. Sobel. "The field of cosmetic surgery is constantly evolving, as is our practice. We will continue to be at the forefront in offering safe, proven, cosmetic enhancements."
