Sean McGettigan of Ottawa, Ill. lost the most weight based on percentage of body weight, making him the first place winner. He lost a total of 77.75 pounds and 31.22 percent of body weight in just 15 weeks. And, besides the prize of improving his health and getting down to the weight he was when he entered the military in the 1980's, he also won $1,500. McGettigan was interested in the challenge as a way to re-gain his health, become more active and to be a good role model to his four kids aged 10 to 14.
The second place winner is Kim Farrell from Ottawa, Ill., she lost a total of 57 pounds and 30.59 percent of body weight. Farrell was dedicated to a lifestyle change, improving her health and being around longer to enjoy her family.
The third place winner is Ryan Ramon from Streator, Ill., he lost a total of 30.52 percent of body weight and he lost the most weight of any contestant -- 88.5 pounds. Ramon is interested in continuing his weight loss effort and losing 10 more pounds. His goal is to be the weight he was when he got out of the military in 1995.
The two contestants who lost the second and third most weight based on percentage of body weight lost also won prizes, a trip for two to Las Vegas, including airfare and hotel accommodations and a year membership to the Ottawa YMCA.
The fourth place winner is Janna Trager of Grand Ridge, Ill., she lost a total of 47 pounds and 23.86 percent of body weight. She not only lost weight, but she also won an overnight trip package to Bettendorf, Iowa, including hotel accommodations, dinner and breakfast for two.
Ottawa Regional Hospital and Healthcare Center measured contestants' fasting glucose (blood sugar), A1C, fractionated cholesterol (total cholesterol, LDL and HDL) and triglycerides at the beginning of the contest and at the conclusion to measure their improvement of health. Blood pressure was also recorded at the beginning and end of the contest. Contestants were also closely monitored each week and they weighed-in at their distributor location when they picked up their SSHE meals.
In addition to weight loss, their lab work and blood pressure saw significant improvements during the 15 weeks. McGettigan's cholesterol dropped from 255 to 177 and his triglycerides dropped from 166 to 39.
Farrell also lowered her blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose, her blood pressure went from 150/91 to 106/70, cholesterol went from 278 to 198 and her fasting blood sugar went from 114 to 91.
Ramon dropped his cholesterol, blood pressure and glucose, his cholesterol went from 278 to 217, blood pressure went from 145/102 to 121/81 and his fasting blood sugar went from 103 to 83.
Trager dropped her cholesterol from 238 to 193 and triglycerides dropped from 205 to 117.
The other contestants also saw big health improvements in 15 weeks, including:
- Bob Beutke lost 66.25 pounds and his cholesterol dropped from 228 to 167.
- Bob Hornbeck lost 41 pounds and his blood pressure dropped from 180/118 to 126/94.
- Andrea Edwards lost 45.5 pounds and her cholesterol dropped from 223 to 189.
- Kristen McGill lost 36 pounds and her blood pressure went from 143/92 to 110/82.
- Heather Treest lost 51 pounds and her cholesterol dropped from 163 to 139.
