Seattle Student Awarded First Annual WISE Scholarship for Women
Dr. Alexander Sobel awards scholarship to STEM student
SEATTLE, Aug. 29, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Alexander Sobel, DO, FAACS of Bellevue is pleased to announce that Angela Flores-Marcus, Seattle resident and future student in Seattle University's Electrical Engineering program, is the recipient of the first-annual WISE (Women in STEM Excel) Scholarship. This scholarship was designed to support female students living in Washington as they pursue a degree in a STEM-related field.
"Angela Flores-Marcus is a dynamic individual actively pursuing her dreams, and I'm honored to help support her education," states Dr. Sobel. "I am excited about the future she is creating for herself and envisioning for others; she is a role model for all of us."
Angela was selected from a number of highly qualified applicants for her academic dedication, leadership, and commitment to community service. At South Seattle College, she served as president of the Women In STEM Club, co-chaired the Queer Straight Alliance, was an undergraduate research assistant with The Internet of Things, and worked as a tutor in the Math Learning Lab. She also volunteers with POW, Rain City Rock Camp for Girls, and South Seattle College Foundation.
"I feel honored to have been selected as the recipient of the WISE Scholarship. This award will allow me to reach my goal of becoming an Electrical and Computer Engineer," says Angela. "In addition to the financial support that this scholarship provides, receiving the WISE Scholarship has given me more confidence as I pursue a field that is mostly male-dominated."
Angela looks forward to working and innovating within the industry. She hopes to impact how people use and think about technology while promoting inclusivity. Additionally, she is an accomplished audio engineer, and also plans to design audio equipment.
"I believe that when women begin to take on more roles in STEM fields, technological innovations will thrive," explains Angela. "Currently, women pursuing careers in STEM fields have very few mentors and leaders in the industry who understand the challenges and barriers that we face. I am looking forward to filling this void by succeeding in my chosen field and mentoring other women along the way."
"The STEM fields are such a vibrant part of the Seattle landscape, and it's important to help make sure that all those who feel called to these careers receive equal opportunities," says Dr. Sobel. "I look forward to continuing the WISE Scholarship to assist women in their pursuit of STEM education."
