Seasoned Cartel Defense Litigator and Former Assistant Chief of the US DOJ Antitrust Division Joins Latham & Watkins
Elizabeth Prewitt brings two decades of government and private practice experience.
WASHINGTON, Sept. 27, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Latham & Watkins LLP1 is pleased to announce that Elizabeth Prewitt has joined the firm as a partner in the Litigation & Trial Department and member of the Global Antitrust & Competition Practice. She focuses on international cartel and antitrust matters.
Prior to transitioning to private practice in 2015, Prewitt spent 16 years as a trial lawyer in the Antitrust Division of the US Department of Justice (DOJ). She served as Assistant Chief of the Antitrust Division in the New York office from 2012 to 2014. Prewitt also served as a Visiting International Enforcer to the European Commission's Directorate-General for Competition in Brussels. While at DOJ, Prewitt twice received the Attorney General's Award for Distinguished Service (the DOJ's second highest award) and the Assistant Attorney General's Award.
Prewitt represents major global and domestic corporations facing criminal and civil antitrust investigations initiated by federal, state, and foreign antitrust enforcement agencies, and also provides related antitrust compliance counseling. She has extensive experience handling cross-border antitrust matters that frequently involve major cartel enforcement regimes in countries beyond the US, including in Europe and Asia. Prewitt has served as lead trial counsel for the government and today represents companies in antitrust litigation.
Amanda Reeves, Co-Chair of the Global Antitrust & Competition Practice, noted: "Latham's practice is second to none globally and can handle any competition challenge our clients may face – from merger clearance and state aid, to civil litigation through trial, to cartel enforcement and antitrust investigations. The experience and inside knowledge that Liz brings to the table from her 16 years of government service in particular further solidifies Latham's status among the top echelon of truly global antitrust groups that can offer best-in-class counsel to companies around the world as they address their most complex antitrust and competition law challenges."
Michael Egge, Office Managing Partner of Latham's Washington, D.C. office and former Co-Chair of the Global Antitrust & Competition Practice, added: "We are delighted to welcome Liz to our global cartel defense team. Our cartel practice has exploded over the last fifteen years, particularly cross-border cartel work where we offer clients a one-stop shop for handling major global cartel investigations. Adding another seasoned US criminal cartel litigator on the east coast with deep government experience provides our clients even more access to market-leading capabilities in the jurisdictions that present the most daunting exposure. Liz does that and so much more because she has guided clients globally, not just in the US. We have delivered clients outstanding results with our integrated global platform, and Liz will further strengthen our unique offering for many years to come."
Prewitt is the latest among several powerhouse antitrust litigators who have joined Latham in the last few months, including Jacques-Philippe Gunther and Adrien Giraud in Paris as well as José Maria Jiménez Laiglesia in Madrid. Latham offers clients market-leading antitrust capabilities in numerous offices throughout the US, Europe, and Asia, and is unrivaled at seamlessly collaborating as an integrated team in global cartel and merger matters.
"Latham is not only home to some of world's finest antitrust lawyers, but the practice group is dynamic, energized and functions exceptionally well as a team, and the synergies between the cutting-edge work they are doing for clients and my areas of focus are a perfect fit," said Prewitt. "We are seeing significant changes in how cartel enforcement and antitrust investigations are handled in jurisdictions around the world, and I am eager to tap into Latham's unique global platform to help my clients navigate increasingly rough waters."
Prewitt has held a number of bar association leadership positions, including serving as Vice Chair of the American Bar Association's Antitrust Law Section, Insurance and Financial Services Committee and Secretary of the New York City Bar's Antitrust and Trade Regulation Committee. She is also a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a former David Rockefeller Fellow.
Prewitt joins Latham from Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP. She received her undergraduate degree with honors from Brown University in 1992 and graduated cum laude from Loyola Law School in 1998.
