Son of Respected Vintner Sabotages Law Career for California Wine: You Be the Judge
NAPA, Calif., June 13, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The best plans are made to be broken. Disruptions like that often involve wine – especially when you're a young vintner like Sean Roney. His successful Washington, D.C. career in law defending domestic violence victims was shaken for his first love: the California wine he grew up with. Trading the courtroom and suits for vineyards and boots, Roney dug into his wine roots to release his very first Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
And the appropriate moniker for such a career-ending wine?
Sabotage.
And the wine? Well, Roney knows his last name puts him under greater scrutiny than his colleagues. He notes the motto for Sabotage is Res Ipsa Loquitor, a legal term meaning "the thing speaks for itself."
"In a trial, it all comes down to the verdict, no matter how hard you fought. In winemaking, it's what's in the bottle: I believe this wine speaks for itself."
Sourced from select hillside and valley vineyards in the Diamond Mountain, St. Helena and Atlas Peak appellations, the exquisite 2014 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a small, 1,000-case production created under the guidance of esteemed winemaker Marco DiGiulio.
Priced at $50, Sabotage is a classic Napa Valley Cabernet – fruit at the forefront, fine tannins, opulent texture and lingering finish. Aged for 20 months in French oak (40% new), the wine is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec added for complexity. It is available in California and select national markets.
"I grew up in the wine business soaking up knowledge from industry greats," said Roney. "Marco is not only a legend in winemaking, he's like an uncle to me. And, of course, my father has greatly influenced my love and understanding about wine and the business of wine."
Roney's father, Vintage Wine Estates President and CEO, Pat Roney, is a long-time industry veteran who started his career as a young sommelier during his college years. Now he oversees the 17th largest wine company in the country with brands including Clos Pegase, Girard, Swanson, Cosentino, Delectus, B.R. Cohn, Viansa Sonoma, Sonoma Coast Vineyards, Clayhouse and Buried Cane.
While wine is certainly a familiar journey for Roney, he loves the adventure: "As a vintner, I'm on a quest for a reaction that what you just tasted is something incredibly special."
