Seaford Student Awarded Verizon Foundation Scholarship
More Than $42.3 Million in Scholarships Awarded to Children of Verizon Employees Since 2001
SEAFORD, Del., June 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Paying for college just got easier for Cassie Wooters of Seaford. She is among 530 students nationwide who will receive scholarships of $5,000 each for the 2011-2012 academic year through the Verizon Foundation's scholarship program for the children and dependents of company employees.
The Verizon Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications.
Wooters, from Seaford Senior High School and the daughter of Verizon employee Jerry Wooters, plans to attend Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania and pursue a degree in exercise science.
The scholarship program selects recipients based on financial need, academic achievement and extracurricular activities. Each scholarship is renewable for three years and has a total value of $20,000. For the 2011-2012 academic year, the Verizon Foundation will provide a total of more than $2.64 million for the scholarships.
Since 2001, the scholarship program has invested more than $42.3 million toward the college education of children and dependents of Verizon employees, benefitting 2,353 students. For the 2011-2012 school year, 100 scholarships are for incoming freshman, and 430 are for continuing support for previous winners.
"Education is a key issue for Verizon and for our communities," said William R. Allan, president of Verizon Delaware. "As a technology company, we know the value of education and are proud to support our future leaders through this scholarship program."
The Verizon Foundation awards the scholarships in partnership with Scholarship America, the nation's largest nonprofit, private sector scholarship and educational support organization, which was founded in 1958.
