SCORE Supports the Growing Business Segment of Mom Entrepreneurs
WASHINGTON, May 11, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- SCORE, – www.score.org- America's premier source of free and confidential small business advice, celebrates those entrepreneurs who balance the demanding roles of mother and business owner on this Mother's Day. According to an April 2012 report by the White House Council on Women and Girls, American women own 30% of small businesses, a total of 7.8 million enterprises, which generate $1.2 trillion a year in sales. Between 1997 and 2007, women-owned companies in the U.S. grew at nearly twice the rate of all U.S. privately held firms, adding roughly 500,000 jobs while other companies lost jobs. In 2011, SCORE aided 272,032 clients, 47.4% of whom were women, in starting or growing their small businesses. SCORE mentors recognize the unique challenges facing mom entrepreneurs and provide one-on-one guidance to help them achieve business success.
SCORE client Vivian Juter Frankel founded her venture, Moms Making Money, in 2004 when she found herself searching for a new job that would better accommodate raising her newly born son. Though she was previously a successful internet marketing consultant, a year of searching jobs boards and submitting resumes proved fruitless. Certain that there were legions of women just like her who were searching for a new way to network and learn about new career options, Frankel launched Moms Making Money Los Angeles, a conference and exposition dedicated to helping mothers establish home-based incomes. Following an extremely successful conference in 2004, Frankel received numerous requests to stage similar events in other parts of the country. Reluctant to be separated from her young son—the very reason she'd organized the conference in the first place—she took her own advice and called on SCORE for help in turning her conference concept into an online community which would provide specialized counseling on business planning and financial organization, online classes, informative podcasts and more.
The Moms Making Money website has become extremely successful, with regional MMM chapters established from Southern California to Connecticut. Reflecting on her time working with SCORE mentor Jerry Earle, Frankel says, "He kept me focused, but also made sure I thought everything through. Without his encouragement, especially through my second pregnancy, I don't know if I could have continued and grown the business to the level it is today."
SCORE has assisted many mom entrepreneurs in its 48 year history and will continue to do so accommodating a growing need like that of Vivian Juter Frankel. For more information on SCORE's work with female entrepreneurs, visit www.score.org/women.
