Some 1,500 homes were damaged or destroyed. Power lines were toppled, leaving and estimated 25,000 people without power. Despite heavy rain, wind and falling temperatures, Volunteer Ministers hauled debris while helping victims find their lost belongings.
They were joined by the Scientology Volunteer Ministers Western U.S. Cavalcade, who set up a large yellow pavilion to serve as a central location where people could go for help. The Volunteer Ministers provided assistance and directed victims in need of social services to the appropriate agencies.
Equipped with effective technology to resolve virtually any difficulty, Volunteer Ministers live by the motto: "No matter the problem, something can be done about it."
The Volunteer Minister program was created in the mid 1970s by Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard, who described the Volunteer Minister as "a person who helps his fellow man on a volunteer basis by restoring purpose, truth and spiritual values to the lives of others."
The Volunteer Minister program is a broad initiative bringing effective physical and spiritual assistance to anyone, anywhere. Since its inception, hundreds of thousands have been trained in a wide range of skills that use Scientology fundamentals to alleviate physical, mental or spiritual suffering and improve any aspect of life—from communication and study to marriage and raising children.
The training is open to anyone who desires to help others and empower them to overcome difficulties and change conditions for the better.
In addition to serving their own communities worldwide, Volunteer Ministers extend their help to remote cities, towns and villages.
