Scientific Non-Profit Takes Proactive Steps to Preventing Plagiarism With iThenticate Logo Recommendations Program

OAKLAND, Calif., Sept 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- With the rise in scholarly misconduct, publishers are increasingly adopting new processes to protect themselves against plagiarism. The American Society for Nutrition (ASN), a non-profit organization of nutrition researchers and publisher of three academic journals on nutrition and dietetics—The Journal of Nutrition, Advances in Nutrition and The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition—has joined those taking an additional step to prevent duplication. ASN is the latest publisher to place a badge on their website and publications signaling to authors that all submissions will be screened using iThenticate, the industry's leading plagiarism detection and prevention technology. 

As part of the iThenticate Logo Recommendations Program, ASN clearly discloses its plagiarism policy and its use of iThenticate to identify instances of duplication. It also presents authors with a direct link to the iThenticate website, where they can check their own papers prior to submission using the same software.

Since 2011, ASN has participated in CrossCheck powered by iThenticate, a service offered by CrossRef® and iParadigms, the maker of iThenticate, that has more than 300 leading publisher participants that permit use of published works within the iThenticate database. This database enables publishers to check writing against more than 122 million content items, including 32 million scholarly articles, books and conference proceedings from more than 90,000 publications, and 24 billion web pages.

To date, nearly 600 journals by leading publishers and publishing organizations—including Palgrave Macmillan, Sophia Publishing Group and Landes Bioscience—have posted an iThenticate logo on their author information pages.
