Schurr High School Now Part of Recycled Water Program
Central Basin partners with the Montebello Unified School District and San Gabriel Valley Water Company to conserve potable water at Schurr High School
COMMERCE, Calif., Nov. 8 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Central Basin Municipal District announced today that Schurr High School of Montebello has finalized its participation to be part of Central Basin's recycled water program. The high school completed the recycled water connection this month. It will use recycled water for its landscape irrigation needs which will save the School District thousands of dollars every year on its water bills.
"We are very pleased that Schurr High School is now part of Central Basin's recycled water program," said Central Basin Board President Ed Vasquez. "We believe it is an extraordinary partnership with the high school, the school district and the San Gabriel Valley Water Company that promises improved water resource management over the long term."
Recycled water is an important facet of our region's water supply portfolio. This is because outdoor irrigation accounts for nearly sixty percent of urban water usage. The use of recycled water at sites such as schools, golf courses and by municipalities for landscapes saves potable water and lessens our region's dependence on imported water.
"Central Basin's recycled water system is vitally important to insure that water is available for future generations in Southern California. Recycled water demand in our service area has increased by 400% in the last twenty years," added Aguilar. Central Basin now has over 215 site connections on its recycled water system, which expects to provide over 5 billion gallons of recycled water for landscape and commercial use.
Central Basin completed Phase One of the Southeast Water Reliability Project several months ago, which created nearly 300 local jobs and generated nearly $50 million in local business revenue. The newly completed recycled water pipeline, which was completed under budget, runs along Beverly Boulevard in Pico Rivera and along Lincoln Boulevard in Montebello. The project utilized $5.6 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) federal funding.
Central Basin is a public agency that wholesales imported water to cities, mutual water companies, investor-owned utilities and private companies in southeast Los Angeles County, serving a population of more than 2 million. In addition, Central Basin provides the region with recycled water for municipal, commercial and industrial uses. Formed in 1952, Central Basin is committed to ensuring a safe and reliable water supply for the region. For more information please visit www.centralbasin.org.
