CANTON, Ohio, Nov. 8, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Paul Schumacher, who grew the nation's largest custom home-building company from a simple idea and a few credit cards, is the 2017 recipient of the prestigious George S. Dively Entrepreneurship honor.
The award was presented by Harvard Business School Club of Northeast Ohio. It is granted annually to a Northeast Ohio person or company demonstrating substantial growth in size and profitability over the previous five years and showing leadership in its industry.
Nominated by 2006 Dively award winner Scott Mueller, CEO of Dealer Tire, Schumacher is the 34th George S. Dively Entrepreneurship honoree. Dively was a Harvard Business School alumnus, job creator and entrepreneur in Northeast Ohio. At the ceremony, Schumacher was introduced by Becca Braun, a graduate of Harvard Business School.
"Paul Schumacher talks about the beauty of taking an idea and seeing it come together in real life, which is the essence of entrepreneurship," Braun said. "Growing an idea into a leading company is exactly what Paul has done with Schumacher Homes. In naming Paul as our 2017 Dively Entrepreneurship honoree, the Harvard Business School Club of Northeastern Ohio celebrates him as one of Northeast Ohio's great, modern entrepreneurs."
Schumacher said he's been inspired by the thousands of homeowners living happily in their Schumacher custom-built homes.
"I started out with an idea, ambition and a few credit cards that I shuffled to fund our initial projects," Schumacher told the audience. "From one house in Canton, Ohio, to homes in all of the major markets in Ohio, down through both Carolinas and out to Louisiana and beyond, we have grown to become the largest custom homebuilder in the United States."
He said entrepreneurs can build success by following their dreams.
"I tell people that if you have an idea, be sure to act on it," Schumacher said. "You can analyze an idea to death. Instead, make a plan, jump in and do it!"
The Harvard Business School Club of Northeastern Ohio is the oldest in the nationwide network of Harvard Business School clubs, having been founded in 1921. Its annual entrepreneurship celebration is named for one of NE Ohio's greatest entrepreneurs, George S. Dively, the former chairman and CEO of the Harris Intertype Co.
