Schultz Family Foundation Commits $30 Million To Help Veterans Navigate The Challenges Of Returning To Civilian Life
Foundation announces creation of Onward Veterans to invest in America's veterans through wellness research, job training and transition programs
SEATTLE, March 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Schultz Family Foundation announced a $30 million commitment to help America's veterans overcome the challenges of returning to civilian life and maximize their skills for America's businesses and communities. Since 2001, approximately 2 million veterans have returned from active duty, and over the next five years another million service members will join them. Through Onward Veterans, the Schultz Family Foundation is dedicated to ensuring this influx of talent receives the support they need to lead healthy and productive lives.
"Returning veterans are a huge economic opportunity for America," said Howard Schultz, Schultz Family Foundation co-founder and Starbucks chairman, president and ceo. "The diverse skills and abilities, and impressive work ethic that veterans gain from their military experience can be game-changers for our businesses and communities. But these heroes face obstacles in returning to civilian life and will need our help before they can help all of us yet again."
Onward Veterans will focus on three of the greatest barriers veterans face in transitioning back into civilian life: their health, their employment, and the reintegration of their families. As part of this commitment, the Foundation will invest resources to better understand and evaluate Post Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury research and alternative treatments; develop specialized job training and placement programs that put veterans on paths to successful, sustainable careers; and develop comprehensive transition programming for veterans and their families. The Foundation is working in partnership with a variety of veterans service programs.
"These men and women have developed valuable skills and have shouldered incredible responsibilities," said Schultz Family Foundation co-founder Sheri Schultz. "As a million veterans transition into civilian life over the next five years, we have a small window of time to ensure that they receive the assistance they need and deserve."
