School Choice Supporters to Rally in Harrisburg, Vow to Protect Education Options for Families
Former Philadelphia Eagle Ricky Waters to join Republican and Democratic legislators at celebration of National School Choice Week
HARRISBURG, Pa., Jan. 21, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- School choice supporters plan to celebrate parental options in education in Harrisburg on Monday, January 26, 2015, to get that message across.
The event will feature remarks from former Philadelphia Eagles running back Ricky Waters, who benefited from school choice as a child; Rep. Mike Turzai (R); and Rep. Jake Wheatley (D); along with students, parents, and community leaders.
The rally, which will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the State Capitol Rotunda, will shine a spotlight on the successes of Pennsylvania's school choice options. Organizers include REACH Alliance, Association of Christian Schools International, Pennsylvania Catholic Conference, Keystone Christian Education Association, and Pennsylvania Cyber Charter Schools.
"We are so fortunate to have charter, parochial, and online schools in addition to tax credits and opportunity scholarships in our state and are thankful that our legislature continues to support these programs. However, there are still many children trapped in failing schools across Pennsylvania and the nation," said Otto Banks, Executive Director of REACH Alliance. "National School Choice Week serves as a tool to remind families, legislators, and advocates that school choice is the key to a brighter future for our nation's children."
Celebrated every year in January, National School Choice Week shines a positive spotlight on all types of effective education options for children, including traditional public schools, public charter schools, magnet schools, private schools, online learning, and homeschooling. The celebration is nonpartisan and nonpolitical. National School Choice Week 2015 will feature a history-making 11,000 independently planned and independently funded events across all 50 states.
