S&C Celebrates 100th Anniversary with New Smart Grid Solutions Demonstration Center
CHICAGO, Sept. 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- S&C Electric Company is celebrating its centennial anniversary with the opening of its Smart Grid Solutions Demonstration Center at the company's global headquarters in Chicago. The demonstration center will allow electric utilities and other visitors to see, in real time, how smart grid technologies respond to grid issues and optimize power delivery systems.
The demonstration center includes interactive exhibits that display S&C's solutions such as self-healing technology, energy storage integration solutions and communications systems. The interactive exhibits showcase the benefits of these technologies and demonstrate how S&C's solutions can improve the efficiency and operating performance of the electrical grid, a crucial goal for utilities.
"Smart grid technology is essential for managing the increasingly complex power delivery problems that utilities around the world face today," says Mike Edmonds, S&C Vice President, Strategic Solutions. "The demonstration center makes it easy to see how smart grid technology is contributing to the development of a more stable and reliable grid."
The Smart Grid Solutions Demonstration Center features the latest innovations from S&C, including IntelliRupter® PulseCloser, PureWave® CES Community Energy Storage, and the IntelliTeam® SG Automatic Restoration System.
S&C's history of innovation began in 1911 when two engineers from Chicago-based Commonwealth Edison founded the company with the development of a breakthrough new product for power grids, the Liquid Power Fuse. This product greatly improved reliability at utility substations, which were prone to frequent and very damaging flashovers during short circuits. S&C's product portfolio now spans a wide range of products, software, and services for electric power grids, from power fuses to advanced grid optimization solutions.
Today S&C's commitment to developing and manufacturing new products remains strong, as demonstrated by S&C's Advanced Technology Center in Chicago, which opened in 2010. S&C has operations across the U.S. and in countries including the United Kingdom, Brazil, Mexico, Canada and China.
"The Liquid Power Fuse was the first of many S&C innovations that improved the reliability and efficiency of power grids over the last century," says John Estey, S&C's President and CEO. "As S&C celebrates its first 100 years, we are proud of where we've been, but more importantly, we are proud of where we are headed. As a global smart grid leader, we will continue to focus on developing and evolving grid solutions that solve power delivery problems and ensure electric grids worldwide can provide the reliability and power quality required to support economic growth and improved quality of life."
