ST. LOUIS, Feb. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Savvis, Inc. (Nasdaq: SVVS), a global leader in cloud infrastructure and hosted IT solutions for enterprises, today announced the availability of the Savvis Symphony Virtual Private Data Center (VPDC) enterprise-class cloud service to clients through Savvis' data centers in the Washington, D.C., metro region.

Symphony VPDC currently allows clients to quickly and securely design and deploy a complete set of enterprise-class data center services for a variety of IT applications. There is no need to physically procure, install, configure or manage any hardware.
"Government agency leaders are turning to cloud computing services to drive operational efficiency, program flexibility and better service to the taxpayer," said Bill Fathers, senior vice president of global sales and marketing at Savvis. "IT leaders are increasingly looking to Savvis to strike the right balance between technology vision and well-executed support. Savvis Symphony VPDC is an enterprise-class service that addresses the concerns large organizations have about privacy, security, scalability and performance."
In October 2010, Savvis Federal Systems was awarded a contract by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to provide cloud computing to federal, state and local government organizations. Savvis is one of a select group of IT infrastructure-as-a-service providers currently engaged with the GSA to provide Federal Information Security Management Act compliance of their cloud platforms for appropriately classified workloads.
As outlined in the recent "25 Point Implementation Plan To Reform Federal IT," U.S. Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra stated that the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) will begin requiring that all agencies "default to cloud-based solutions whenever a secure, reliable, cost-effective option exists." As outlined in OMB's implementation plan, federal IT reform will rely heavily on cloud computing services for a wide range of benefits:
- Economics: Cloud computing is a pay-as-you-go approach to IT, in which a low initial investment is required to begin, and additional investment is needed only as system use increases.
- Flexibility: IT departments that anticipate fluctuations in user demand no longer need to scramble for additional hardware and software. With cloud computing, they can add or subtract capacity quickly and easily.
- Speed: Cloud computing eliminates long procurement and certification processes, while providing a near-limitless selection of services.
Savvis currently serves many high-profile U.S. government agencies -- such as the Federal Election Commission and National Labor Relations Board -- through cloud, web hosting and other services.
Launched in June 2010, Savvis Symphony VPDC is a critical part of Savvis' industry-leading service portfolio, which helps government agencies and enterprise businesses around the world achieve strategic benefit from their IT investment. For more information, visit www.savvisknowscloud.com.
