Saudi-led Coalition Confirms Commitment to Humanitarian Truce in Yemen

Airstrikes Resume in Response to Houthi Aggression

WASHINGTON, May 18, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Saudi Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir said today that, while the Saudi-led coalition remains committed to a humanitarian truce in Yemen, the Houthis' violations of the ceasefire has led to the resumption of coalition airstrikes. 

Minister Al-Jubeir said that the coalition has exerted strenuous effort to deliver aid and cooperate with all international relief organizations. He expressed regret that the truce did not achieve its humanitarian goals, attributing the failure to the Houthis and their allies for seizing the aid and preventing it from reaching the Yemeni people. He reiterated the coalition's continued determination to deliver aid and alleviate the suffering of the brotherly people of Yemen.

The foreign minister said that Houthi militias have continued their military operations despite the truce, citing as many as 39 hostile actions in the Jazan region and 35 attacks in the Najran region, in addition to their redeploying missile launchers along the Saudi border, thereby threating Saudi cities. Minister Al-Jubeir said that Houthi militias have continued their military operations and redeployed their forces to attack provinces and cities in Yemen, including Taiz and Dhali, as well as the complete occupation of the village of Lauder.

The Saudi-led coalition remains committed to the rules outlined in the truce, but the  truce depends on the Houthis' respect for the ceasefire. He added that the coalition will respond forcibly if violations persist or if humanitarian aid to the Yemeni people is prevented.
