Saturna's 2011 charitable giving program went beyond traditional matching contributions offered by many companies and allowed employees to leverage their holiday bonuses for greater impact. All eligible employees were given the choice of receiving a holiday bonus and directing a charitable donation of equal size to one non-profit organization, or to forgo a bonus in order to increase their charitable contribution by three and one-half times. This year, half of Saturna's 55 eligible employees opted to direct their bonuses to charity.
"Our giving program not only promotes broad diversity in the charitable causes we support as a firm, but it also ensures that we give to organizations that have significance for our employees, their families, and their communities," said Jane Carten, Saturna's President and CEO. "The fact that so many of our employees voluntarily sacrifice their year-end bonus to support those in need tells me that our internal initiatives to promote philanthropy are working."
Since 2007, the company's employees have directed a total of $565,250 in donations, including year-end bonuses they relinquished in order to take advantage of Saturna's uniquely designed incentive structure.
Saturna's significant yearly community impact and the historically high rate of relinquished employee bonuses factored prominently in the national recognition Saturna received as co-recipient of the Mutual Fund Education Alliance's 2011 Community Investment Award, which it shared with American Century Investments. The prestigious annual award recognizes the mutual fund industry's top corporate citizens who demonstrate exemplary contributions to the well-being of their communities.
2011 contributions were directed to 48 non-profit organizations, the vast majority of which are based near Saturna's corporate headquarters in Bellingham, Washington. Organizations receiving the largest donations include: St. Paul's Academy ($7,000), Slum Doctor Programme ($7,000), Fidelity Charitable ($7,000), Bellingham Food Bank ($5,500), and UPLIFT Charity ($4,500). Donations in the amount of $3,500 were made to Beth Israel Building Fund, Brigid Collins Family Support Center, Cascades Montessori Middle School, Cornerstone Christian School Society, F.A.C.E.S. Northwest, Helpline House, Interfaith Coalition, ISNA Development Foundation (Youth Fund), Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood, Regent College Marketplace Institute, Room to Read, Sink the Dinghy Program (Bellingham Yacht Club), Somaly Mam Foundation, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Whatcom Counseling and Psychiatric Clinic, Whatcom County Pregnancy Clinic, Whatcom Tesseract, WWU Foundation, and Youth With A Mission Chicago.
