First established as S&S Services in 1984 by Karin and Al Schwerman, the company initially offered limited logistic services in the Houston area. In 1994, three years after joining the staff at S&S, Kevin Brady purchased the company, incorporated it as Satellite Logistics Group, and proceeded to expand the company's scope and service offerings to address the needs of beverage producers and importers.
Today, SLG serves beverage companies around the world, helping to manage their business more efficiently and cost effectively, scale their supply chain to meet business needs, and accommodate changing marketplace demands. Customers include rapidly growing craft brewers such as Sierra Nevada and Lagunitas Brewing Company as well as market leaders such as Heineken, Diageo and Constellation Brands. Through a corporate culture focused on identifying and satisfying the unique needs of customers, SLG has achieved remarkable year-on-year growth under Brady's leadership.
SLG has developed a number of innovative solutions to address brewers' supply chain challenges such as:
- To help brewers optimize asset usage, reduce loss or theft, and meet market needs, SLG introduced Kegspediter®, an innovative reverse logistics service, in 1994. Keg management has become increasingly critical as brewers' operations expand and they need to retrieve empty kegs for refilling. To further service draft beer producers, the company also provides keg processing capabilities such as draining, bar-coding for tracking, and maintenance scheduling.
- To help brewers increase efficiency, ensure optimal freight management and control costs, SLG developed its comprehensive LogiTrax® supply chain management services in 2006, complete with a state-of-the-art transportation management system (TMS).
- To help brewers dispose of non-salable beverages in an environmentally friendly and legal way, SLG developed the only nationwide green solution for material recovery, introducing EcoBev® in 2008. Brewers are able to dispose of products responsibly, while protecting brand integrity and saving time and money.
- To help customers manage their supply chains as efficiently as possible and minimize their environmental footprint, SLG became a SmartWay® Logistics Company Partner in 2009 and has earned annual recertification for six consecutive years.
SLG has continued to grow and expand with financial support through equity partnerships, first by Morgenthaler Private Equity in 2010 and, most recently, by global beverage-logistics giant JF Hillebrand Group AG in 2013.
As a majority-owned addition to the JF Hillebrand Group, SLG has continued its steady growth pattern and expanded its global capabilities. Just this year, for example, the company opened a new deconsolidation warehouse in Felixstowe, England, helping to enhance brewers' keg management efficiencies in the United Kingdom and throughout Europe.
"It is remarkable how much the beverage industry has grown and changed since our company was first established," said Kevin Brady, SLG president and CEO. "Supply chain plays an increasingly critical role in the industry today. We're proud that our services have expanded to help brewers accommodate the growing complexity of the marketplace, and we look forward to helping them stay ahead of the curve for years to come."
SLG has earned a number of industry awards, including the "Top Green Providers" list by Food Logistics magazine and the "Supply & Demand Chain Executive 100" (SDCE100), an award that recognizes 100 transformative supply chain projects. SLG's Kevin Brady has been named one of Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine's Pros to Know and an Ernst & Young "Entrepreneur of the Year."
