SARDANA Wins Global Telecoms Business Innovation Award 2011
Next-generation PON solution revolutionizes capacity, density and reach
HIGH WYCOMBE, United Kingdom, June 8, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- SARDANA, short for Scaled Advanced Ring-based passive Dense Access Network Architecture, was founded in 2008 with European Commission sponsorship. Tellabs is the only infrastructure vendor in the consortium, whose other members include France Telecom's Orange unit and several major research universities.
SARDANA is making a difference in the communications industry, now winning the Global Telecoms Business (GTB) Innovation Award 2011. Global Telecoms Business (GTB) recognizes the most innovative projects in the industry annually. The award committee notices the projects, which according to the committee "will make a difference to the communications sector."
In the SARDANA project, Tellabs provided GPON equipment and hosted lab demonstrations at its facilities. France Telecom tested the architecture in a field trial, and other partners provided technical support and research.
Pushing the limits of PON
By connecting metro and access networks into one, the ring-based WDM-PON solution will revolutionize the capacity, density and reach of traditional PON solutions. In fact, SARDANA will offer more capacity to a single user than many companies are using today.
The latest PON technology supports one downstream and one upstream wavelengths, and offers a possibility for an 'overlay' wavelength for RF video services. The truly passive WDM/TDM-PON solution explodes the capacity limits.
The new solution offers 32 lambdas (wavelengths) at 10Gbps downstream and 32 lambdas at 2.5Gbps upstream wavelengths within a single SARDANA ring fiber. It grows the bandwidth capacity of the SARDANA PON over 128 times compared to ITU-T G.984 GPON.
The SARDANA extends the reach of fiber connection up to 100 kilometers (60 miles) compared to a traditional GPON standards. The new solution also adds the number of homes served for up to 1000 homes. This means that a single optical-line-terminal port (OLT) will serve 15 to 30 times more consumers than today.
"Convergence is what SARDANA is all about. By merging the metro and access parts of the networks, carriers can reduce capital costs," says Dan Kelly, executive vice president, Tellabs global products. "The challenge for service providers is how to deliver more and more services at higher bandwidths and make the economics work when revenue per user is largely fixed. We understand that very well, and it challenges us to innovate and drive down costs."
